For years I’ve been taught that the book and movie series, Harry Potter, was ungodly and should not be read. I would never have thought that I would one day be interested in reading the Harry Potter books because I always thought that if I picked it up and read even a word of the book that I would either be cursed or burn. Strange thinking, I know, but that’s what happens when you’ve learned your whole life to stay away from something.
Curiosity killed the cat, and in this case, my curiosity led me to have my own opinion on the Harry Potter books. Now, let me just start by saying that I have only read the first two books and I think that is all I will ever read, and I will explain why. At the beginning, I was very intrigued by the storyline and the writing style. As the story started to evolve, I started becoming more engrossed into the story. I ended up reading the first Harry Potter book, The Sorcerer’s Stone, in about three days. I think that The Sorcerer’s Stone was a very good introduction into the series, which made me want to read more. There was not that much magic or darkness going on in the story at this point so I felt like the ‘danger’ of the series was over dramatized. However, when I was getting to the end of the second book, something changed. The second Harry Potter book, Chamber of Secrets, was another good book by JK Rowling, but then I started to feel the darkness that was on the pages coming off of them and into my mind. I think the part that really affected me was the snake language, called Parseltongue. As soon as that came into play, I felt really uncomfortable and my insides started telling me that there was something deeper going on here. Let me just say that I have nothing against the series. If you are into the books and find them fascinating, then by all means, read them. I am not judging you because everyone picks up on different things. I, however, found that there was real darkness in the books and have decided to not continue in finishing it, which is not like me. I usually have to finish a series no matter what, because I love to learn what happens to the characters. For all those people reading this that have sensitive spirits, I suggest that you do not read these books because there is darkness in the books. To all those who want a good story that makes you want to read more, then I will say that you might like the Harry Potter series. Many people have seen the movies, I have not, but if you’ve only seen the movies, and liked them, but have not read the books, then you should totally read the books because they will probably put a better spin on what happened in the background that was not shown on the big screen. |
