Books all have meaning. They might be hidden, but they are always there. When Christian authors write fiction, it might seem that they leave God out, but they don’t. Throughout the story there are biblical similarities and if you read very closely you are able to learn the true meaning of the story.
A book like this is Divergent, by Veronica Roth. It’s a story about a girl named Tris who is different. The story takes place in Chicago, after the fall of America and the people have been split into five factions. These factions are; Erudite - the knowledgeable, Amity - the peaceful, Candor - the honest, Abnegation - the selfless, and Dauntless - the brave.
Tris was born into Abnegation, but she doesn't feel like she belongs there. After turning sixteen, everyone is required to take an aptitude test to tell them what faction they belong in. Unfortunately for Tris, her test results came back inconclusive because she did not just get one result, she got three. This meant that Tris was a Divergent, one who could not be controlled.
Throughout the book we read Tris’ time being an initiate for Dauntless and the struggle she has in understanding exactly what she is. From a Christian point of view, we are able to understand that the Erudite people are eating from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, and not from the tree of life. We also know that Tris is like a prophet, called for a purpose. As Christians, people are always trying to put us into categories, but no one has been able to do it because we do not follow the ways of the world, but God’s.
Veronica Roth does a great job enticing the reader into her story. I have read the book twice already and could not put it down. There is romance, violence, humor, and a great message. It’s one of those books that should be read by most teens because it teaches us to not be just one thing, but to be brave, honest, kind, selfless, and intelligent.
The whole Divergent series has a great message and a solid storyline. I could not believe that my parents even liked it! For all those who want to read a book that has a good message and contains spiritual insight, then I recommend Divergent.
