In a matter of two days, I have read two of Kasie West’s books. The first one was The Fill-In Boyfriend, which I reviewed one week ago. The next book I read, that I actually just finished, was On the Fence, which I will be reviewing this week.
I would like to start by saying that Kasie has a gift, because she has the ability to write for teens and demonstrates an understanding of the teenage mind and the way we operate. While reading both of these books, I felt like she was writing especially for me and the plot kept me on my toes the entire time. It’s like her books have the power to make you physically unable to put the book down.
Now, on to the book review. On the Fence is about a girl name Charlotte, or Charlie as everyone else calls her. She’s the only girl in her family. After her mother died in a car accident, her father was left to raise her and her three brothers. Without a mother, Charlie has had to grow up in a world filled with men, so she doesn’t have a clue about how to actually be a girl.
That, however, changes when she is forced to find a job after getting her third speeding ticket. Charlie ends up getting hired at a chichi boutique where she has to dress the part and associate with girls and not guys. It’s a whole new world for Charlie and there are struggles along the way.
To keep a handle on the challenges and situations she faces, Charlie finds herself going into her yard in the middle of the night and having a conversation with her long time neighbor, Braden, who lives on the other side of her yard fence. After their first “Fence Chat,” Charlie and Braden find themselves meeting almost every night after midnight to talk about the things that are happening in her and Braden’s lives.
As these chats go on, Charlie becomes aware of the fact that she’s falling hard for Braden. Will she have the courage to tell Braden about her feelings and risk their friendship? Or will she keep quiet and start a relationship with a new guy who has never seen Charlie without makeup and girly clothes? These are the questions to consider when reading On the Fence.
If you are looking for a book that captures every emotion possible, and keeps you wanting more even if it is getting past three am, then this is the book for you. Really, every book that Kasie West writes is for you!
