"The fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself...no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its dreams, because every second of the search is a second's encounter with God and with eternity." ~ Paulo Coelho
It’s taken me over four years to purchase the book The Alchemist, which was written by Paulo Coelho! I’d ordered it on Amazon, but I guess the order didn’t go through because I never received it. It may have been that during that time I wasn’t supposed to read it, but now was the time for me to finally purchase The Alchemist and read it.
I was really excited to read this book and see why it was a best-seller. I didn't really know what the book was truly about before I started reading it because the synopsis was quite vague. It just said that it was about a young, Spanish, shepherd boy named Santiago who was on a journey to find hidden treasure at the Pyramids in Egypt, but there was far more to it than a treasure hunt.
The Alchemist’s main purpose, I think, is to make the reader really think about where their life is heading and what their purpose is. This book has a timely message because we are all in search for our own Personal Legend. The journey is a rough one but once we have found it, the pain will be forgotten and we will treasure what we learned along the way.
I loved Paulo Coelho's style of writing and how each of the characters was introduced. It was nice to not be overwhelmed with a bunch of names at once or be lost in what was going on. I can definitely see why this book is a classic and must read! When you read this book, you will be taken on the ride of your life without taking a physical step. Reading about Santiago’s journey to his Personal Legends gives us hope that our life isn’t a waste and that we were all created to fulfill a certain purpose.
