It’s awesome to read a book that was written ninety years ago and see the differences in culture. Life was very different ninety years ago and I love to read about what was normal in the 1900s, because it gives me the ability to fantasize about living in that era and interacting in everyday life.
The Great Gatsby let me do just that. As I read this amazing classic by F. Scott Fitzgerald, I visualized myself going to one of Gatsby’s extravagant parties, witnessing the love he had for Daisy and the friendship that was formed between him and Nick Carraway. Fitzgerald wrote details that made this visualization easy and enjoyable. There wasn’t too much detail, that often happens in classic books, which made the book pleasurable and not unbearably hard to get through.
For those of you who do not know what The Great Gatsby is about, let me tell you. The book is written from Nick Carraway’s point of view as he was the one to witness the love affairs between Daisy Buchanan and Jay Gatsby and with Tom Buchanan, Daisy’s husband, and his mistress, Myrtle Wilson.
After attending one of Gatsby’s incredible parties, Nick and Gatsby become close acquaintances. Once Gatsby is told that Nick is a relative of Daisy Buchanan, a girl he met five years before when she wasn’t married, he comes up with a way to see her again and tell her how he has always felt.
Through a series of events, Nick gets caught up in the secrets of Gatsby, Daisy, and Tom. It’s not until years later that he writes the events down for the world to read. It’s a story filled with betrayal, love, secrets, laughs, sadness, and delight. Some people might find The Great Gatsby just a book about affairs, but that’s probably because they weren’t able to look past that and see the style of writing, the culture of that time, and the adventure that a reader can go on when reading this book.
If you enjoy great classics, this could be the perfect addition to your library. It’s short but takes a while to read because of all the detail and the information that this small book contains. It’s a great read that I will recommend to anyone that has respect for the art of writing.
