For the last four years, The Help has been at the top of my to-read list. Ever since I saw the movie, back in 2011, I have wanted to read this book; however, it wasn’t until two weeks ago that I finally went to the bookstore to buy myself a copy and started reading.
The Help is an incredible story about a white girl and two black maids who decide to do the unthinkable! It’s 1964 in Jackson, Mississippi, and segregation is stronger than ever. Skeeter has just returned home after finishing college and is devastated when she learns that her beloved maid, Constantine, is no longer working for her family. She doesn’t want to spend her days looking for a husband, much to her mother's dismay; instead, Skeeter longs to be a writer and after being inspired by a publisher in New York, Skeeter embarks on a path that could end in destruction.
Aibileen and Minny have been working for white folk most of their lives. You could even say that they’ve mastered the art of invisibility, though Minny’s sassy mouth gets the better of her on a regular basis. These two women would never have dreamed that they would form an alliance with a white girl, but after Skeeter asks Aibileen to help her answer questions for her new job, a bond begins to form.
The Help is a wonderful novel that gives us a glimpse of what towns like Jackson could have been like during the 60s. With this book, you will laugh, cry, gasp, smile, and cling to its pages as you escape into its world. The Help was one of the best novels I have read this year and it kept me on my toes the entire time. Even though I'd seen the movie, I still thoroughly enjoyed reading the book and felt like it was the first time I was hearing this story.
